Bringing domestic pets with you to Italy

Movement of Pets (Dogs, Cats and Ferrets)-New Pet Regulation, applicable from 29/12/2014 The new Pet Regulation and the amendment of the animal health requirements governing intra-Union trade in and imports into the Union of dogs, cats and ferrets were published on 26 June 2013 following the adoption by the European Parliament and the Council: Regulation (EU) No 576/2013 – Directive 2013/31/EU

 

According to the regulation, passengers may enter Italy with up to a maximum of five pets and all pets introduced in Italy from Australia, must obtain an official veterinary certificate issued by a certified veterinarian in the country of origin. The issue date on the certificate should not exceed 30 days prior the departure date. The certificate does NOT need to be authenticated or certified by this Consulate.

 

THE EUROPEAN REGULATION

The regulation states that pets (or domestic animals) should:

  • Be identifiable by a clearly readable tattoo or an electronic identification system (transponder/microchip), which provides the pet owner’s name and address;
  • have a valid vaccination against rabies.
  • It is prohibited to introduce in Italy cats and dogs that are younger than three months of age and not vaccinated against the virus of rabies.
  • Dog owners, please note that in Italy it is mandatory to use:
    • A muzzle for dogs that walk on the streets or any other open space without a leash;
    • A muzzle and a leash for dogs led in public places and public transportation (article 83 of D.P.R. 320/54 of the Veterinary Police Regulations).
