How and when to submit the declaration of intent

The declaration of intent to reacquire Italian citizenship can be submitted between July 1, 2025, and December 31, 2027.

It must be made in person before a civil status officer at the Consular Office. Witnesses are not required.

Interested parties may submit their declaration of intent to reacquire Italian citizenship at this Consulate , without an appointment, on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 09:00 to 12:30 (last admission at 12:00 PM).

Applicants who WERE BORN IN ITALY must:

  1. Present their Australian (or foreign) passport and proof of residential address (e.g., driver’s license, utility bill, or lease agreement).
  2. Provide the following documents:
    • Birth certificate issued by the relevant Italian municipality;
    • naturalization certificate (from Australia or another country), and if applicable, a certificate of renunciation of Italian citizenship, showing the cause and date of citizenship loss;
    • If the date of loss is not clearly stated in the above documents, it must be provided separately.
  3. Pay the consular fee of €250, as required under Article 7C (see consular fees).
    Payment must be made in Australian dollars, either by debit card (credit cards not accepted) or in cash.

 

Applicants who WERE NOT BORN IN ITALY must:

  1. Present their Australian (or foreign) passport and proof of residential address (e.g., driver’s license, utility bill, or lease agreement).
  2. Provide the following documents:
    • Original birth certificate with apostille and translation;
    • historical certificate of residence in Italy for at least two consecutive years, issued by the relevant Italian municipality;
    • historical certificate of Italian citizenship to prove prior possession;
    • naturalization certificate (from Australia or another country), and if applicable, a certificate of renunciation of Italian citizenship, showing the cause and date of citizenship loss;
    • If the date of loss is not clearly stated in the above documents, it must be provided separately.
  3. Pay the consular fee of €250, as required under Article 7C (see consular fees).
    Payment must be made in Australian dollars, either by debit card (credit cards not accepted) or in cash.

If the required documentation is incomplete, the declaration will not be accepted.

 

IMPORTANT

Substitute declarations under Articles 46 and 47 of Presidential Decree No. 445 of December 28, 2000, cannot be used in place of the required documentation.
