Cultural Diplomacy

Among the tasks of the Consulate there is also that of promoting the Italian culture and language in Western Australia in order to strengthen our bilateral relations and encourage effective multicultural exchanges.

Such goal is achieved through the organization of cultural events and other integrated promotion initiatives along the axes defined by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation. Some exhibitions proposed annually concern design, cinema, music, language, contemporary art and gastronomy.

The Italian Cultural Institute in Melbourne is competent for the district of Western Australia.

Other local entities are the Italo-Australian Welfare and Cultural Center and the Dante Alighieri Society.

Equally important is the spreading of the Italian language in every local context, from kindergarten to university. According to data collected in 2022, there were approximately 60,000 Italian language students across the State.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation offers grants and financial contributions every year for the teaching of Italian and for the purchase of teaching materials, as well as prizes and grants for the translation of Italian works into a foreign language. The related announcements are published in the News section of this website.

The entities that are active in spreading the Italian language, in collaboration with the Consulate, are the Italo-Australian Welfare and Cultural Centre, the Western Australia Association of the Teachers of Italian, the University of Western Australia (where a lecturer sent from Italy works) and the Dante Alighieri Society.

All of the activities mentioned above as well as many other information about Italian culture, language and creativity are available on the web portal ITALIANA.
