We hereby inform that, from July 1, 2025 to December 31, 2027, it will be possible to submit a declaration of re-acquisition of Italian citizenship, pursuant to Art. 17, paragraph 1, of Law no. 91/1992, as amended by Law no. 74/2025.

Applications for re-acquisition will be accepted exclusively on a walk-in basis, on the following days and times:

⚠️ PLEASE NOTE:
Only applications complete with all required documentation, as specified in the checklist published on the website, will be considered.
It is the sole responsibility of the applicant to submit all documents duly legalized (apostilled) and translated, as required by current regulations.
💶 A consular fee of €250 is required.
âś… ELIGIBILITY FOR RE-ACQUISITION
Italian citizenship may be re-acquired in the following cases:
The applicant must be:
-
born in Italy, or
-
have resided in Italy for at least two consecutive years;
And must have lost Italian citizenship no later than August 15, 1992, in one of the following ways:
-
voluntarily acquired a foreign citizenship and moved abroad;
-
renounced Italian citizenship after involuntarily acquiring another citizenship;
-
was a minor child living with a parent who lost Italian citizenship and acquired a foreign one.
â›” NOT ELIGIBLE FOR RE-ACQUISITION
Re-acquisition is not permitted in the following cases:

The applicant was born abroad and never resided in Italy for at least two consecutive years;

Lost citizenship after August 15, 1992;
-
Lost citizenship due to military service or employment with a foreign government;
-
Did not exercise the option under Art. 5, paragraph 2, of Law no. 123/1983.
📝 HOW TO SUBMIT THE DECLARATION OF INTENT
The declaration must be made in person, exclusively at the Consular Office, between July 1, 2025 and December 31, 2027.
đź“„ Required documentation in original, complete, and authentic form (documents issued by foreign authorities must be presented with apostille and translated):

birth certificate;

For those born abroad: historical certificate of residence in Italy for at least two consecutive years;

Historical certificate of Italian citizenship (proving previous possession of Italian citizenship);

Documentation proving the reason and date of loss of Italian citizenship: naturalization certificate or birth certificate accompanied by the citizenship certificate and the legal basis under which the foreign citizenship was acquired;

💶 A consular fee of €250 is required.
⚠️ Self-declarations under Articles 46 and 47 of Presidential Decree 445/2000 are not accepted.
🛂 EFFECTS OF RE-ACQUISITION
Italian citizenship is re-acquired on the day following the declaration, with no retroactive effect.
⚠️ Re-acquisition does not extend to minor children residing abroad. For such acquisition (so-called iuris communicatione), the minor child must now be living in Italy with the parent re-acquiring citizenship for at least two years prior to the re-acquisition.
Once citizenship is re-acquired, all rights and obligations apply, including:

AIRE registration

Updating civil status

Requesting a passport and identity card, by appointment (via Prenot@mi)
