What to submit to register minor children born in Australia

To register the birth of minor children born in Australia, this Office must receive:

  1. The registration form;
  2. The original birth certificate, issued by the “Registry of Births, Deaths and Marriages“ certified by an apostille (issued by the “Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade”);
  3. The translation into Italian of the birth certificate by an official NAATI translator or done independently. If opting for an independent translation, please note that it must be fully accurate and conform to the original text. Should this Office find discrepancies compared to the English text or missing elements, all documentation will be returned to the applicant to be amended. Please note that the translation of the apostille is NOT required. The translation is NOT required to be certified by apostille.
  4. A photocopy of the Italian parent’s Italian identity card or Italian passport and a photocopy of the foreign parent’s passport (if the parents are not both Italian).
  5. Evidence of one of the requirements established by the law converting Decree-Law No. 36/2025:

a) An Italian citizen parent (including adoptive) possesses exclusively Italian citizenship at the time of the child’s birth (e.g., full birth certificate to be requested from the Italian Municipality, certificate of non-naturalization from the relevant foreign authorities, copy of visa, foreign citizenship renunciation statement issued by the relevant foreign authorities);

b) An Italian citizen parent (including adoptive) resided in Italy for at least two consecutive years, after acquiring Italian citizenship and before the minor child’ birth or adoption (e.g., historical certificate of residence to be requested from the Italian Municipality);

c) A grandparent possesses – or must have possessed at the time of death – exclusively Italian citizenship at the time of the minor child’s birth (e.g., full birth certificate to be requested from the Italian Municipality, certificate of non-naturalization from the relevant foreign authorities, copy of visa, foreign citizenship renunciation statement issued by the relevant foreign authorities);

d) The minor does not have and cannot acquire any other citizenship.
