{"id":594,"date":"2023-04-14T12:41:36","date_gmt":"2023-04-14T10:41:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/consperth.esteri.it\/?page_id=594"},"modified":"2026-04-16T16:09:58","modified_gmt":"2026-04-16T08:09:58","slug":"how-to-marry-in-italy","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/consperth.esteri.it\/en\/servizi-consolari-e-visti\/servizi-per-il-cittadino-italiano\/stato-civile\/how-to-marry-in-italy\/","title":{"rendered":"How to marry in Italy"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>MARRIAGE IN ITALY: POSTING OF BANNS (ITALIAN CITIZENS)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Italian citizens AIRE-registered through this Consulate and wishing to get married in Italy must request a marriage banns publication (<em>pubblicazioni di matrimonio<\/em>)\u00a0 by submitting the following documents at the counter on Tuesday\u00a0 and Thursday between 9.00 am &#8211; 12.00 am.\u00a0 \u00a0The future bride and groom will\u00a0 need to\u00a0 attend in person and bring along:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>the banns <a href=\"https:\/\/consperth.esteri.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/02-richiesta-di-pubblicazioni-congiunta-2020.pdf\"><strong>application form<\/strong><\/a>;<\/li>\n<li>the reservation at the Town Hall or church in Italy where the wedding will take place;<\/li>\n<li>the \u201cResult of Marriage Search\u201d certificates for the bride and for the groom (issued by the <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.bdm.dotag.wa.gov.au\/\">WA Registry of Births, Deaths and Marriages<\/a><\/strong>);<\/li>\n<li>for non-Italian citizens only, an original\u00a0<strong>full birth certificate<\/strong>, recent and consistent with the passport (no need of translation or <em>apost\u00eclle);<\/em><\/li>\n<li>for divorced parties, a copy of the divorce order.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>A banns certificate is valid for 6 months. We suggest applicants to request it 2-3 months before the wedding day.<\/p>\n<p>Applicants who are residents of Italy or AIRE-registered through another Consulate must request their marriage banns from the relevant Municipality or Consulate.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>MARRIAGE IN ITALY: <em>ATTO NOTORIO<\/em> (AUSTRALIAN AND US CITIZENS)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Australian and US citizens residing in WA and intending to get married in Italy need to book an appointment with us to obtain a document called <em>atto notorio <\/em>by emailing to<em> perth.statocivile@esteri.it <\/em>and attaching the atto notorio<a href=\"https:\/\/consperth.esteri.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/\u2022Richiesta-atto-notorio.doc\"><strong> application form<\/strong><\/a> and valid passport copies of bride and groom-to-be, as well as of the four witnesses.<\/p>\n<p>The bride- and the groom-to-be will have to attend the appointment, together with:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>four witnesses<\/strong> (not related to either party and not having the same family name as either party\u2019s), each carrying a valid passport or driving licence;<\/li>\n<li>individual valid passport;<\/li>\n<li>original full birth certificate of bride and groom to be, recent and consistent with the passport (Australian citizens only);<\/li>\n<li>if divorced, a plain copy of the divorce order.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>For further requirements, please contact the <a href=\"http:\/\/italy.embassy.gov.au\/rome\/Marriage.html\">Embassy of Australia in Rome<\/a>.
