{"id":182,"date":"2023-03-06T20:26:52","date_gmt":"2023-03-06T12:26:52","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/consperth.esteri.it\/servizi-consolari-e-visti\/servizi-per-il-cittadino-italiano\/passaporti-e-carte-didentita\/"},"modified":"2026-04-17T11:30:38","modified_gmt":"2026-04-17T03:30:38","slug":"passaporti-e-carte-didentita","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/consperth.esteri.it\/en\/servizi-consolari-e-visti\/servizi-per-il-cittadino-italiano\/passaporti-e-carte-didentita\/","title":{"rendered":"Passports"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>NEW! <span style=\"color: #339966;\">PASSPORTS FOR OVER 65 AND EXPECTANT MOTHERS<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>From 8 January 2024, AIRE citizens over 65 can apply for and <strong>obtain a new passport on a first-come, first served basis<\/strong> without an appointment: <strong>walk-in service\u00a0 on Fridays <\/strong>from 2:00 pm to 3:30 pm.<\/p>\n<p class=\"domanda\"><span style=\"color: #339966;\"><strong>WHEN CAN I APPLY FOR A PASSPORT?<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"risposta\">\n<p>A passport can be issued to<strong> Italian citizens<\/strong> in the following cases:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>after expiration of current passport;<\/li>\n<li>before the expiration of current passport (but only within the last 6 months of its validity). In exceptional circumstances, which must be demonstrated and will be assessed on a case-by-case basis, a new passport may be issued even if the current one has more than six months of residual validity;<\/li>\n<li>when the current passport has been lost, stolen or damaged;<\/li>\n<li>when a remaining validity of <strong>more than 6 months<\/strong> is required (see 2 above);<\/li>\n<li>when the number of blank pages in the current passport is not sufficient.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>In case of passports lost or stolen, holders are strongly advised to report the incident with the WA Police as soon as possible, so at the appointment they can bring a copy of the report or its registration number.<\/p>\n<p>Holders will also have to sign a report at the Consulate, which will be forwarded to Italy\u2019s Police.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"53\" data-end=\"85\"><span style=\"color: #339966;\"><strong data-start=\"53\" data-end=\"85\">ISSUANCE OF PASSPORT: TIMING<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"87\" data-end=\"195\">The issuance of the passport takes place \u201c<em>on the spot<\/em>,\u201d that is, within a maximum of thirty minutes, <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>unless<\/strong><\/span>:<\/p>\n<ol data-start=\"197\" data-end=\"1351\">\n<li data-start=\"197\" data-end=\"252\">\n<p data-start=\"199\" data-end=\"252\">the applicant resides in another consular district;<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"253\" data-end=\"394\">\n<p data-start=\"255\" data-end=\"394\">there is a technical problem that prevents it (for example, loss of internet connectivity or another unforeseeable technical impediment);<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"395\" data-end=\"541\">\n<p data-start=\"397\" data-end=\"541\">it is impossible to proceed with payment (for example, malfunction of the debit card or our EFTPOS machine, and unavailability of exact cash);<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"542\" data-end=\"767\">\n<p data-start=\"544\" data-end=\"767\">there are \u201c<em>obstructive causes<\/em>\u201d; in this case, we are obliged to request authorization (\u201cNulla Osta\u201d) from the competent Police Headquarters (Questura) in Italy for the issuance of the passport and wait for their response;<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"768\" data-end=\"1189\">\n<p data-start=\"770\" data-end=\"1189\">the applicant is not registered with AIRE; AIRE registration is mandatory (see AIRE section), and failure to register may, in certain circumstances, result in a fine of up to one thousand euros for each year of non-registration. In cases where registration is not required by the circumstances, we are still obliged to request authorization (\u201cNulla Osta\u201d) and delegation from the competent Questura in Italy and wait;<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1190\" data-end=\"1351\">\n<p data-start=\"1192\" data-end=\"1351\">the residential address or other personal details in our AIRE database are not updated; all personal records must be updated before a passport can be issued.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #339966;\"><strong>HOW CAN I MAKE AN APPOINTMENT TO OBTAIN A NEW PASSPORT?<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"HwtZe\" lang=\"en\"><span class=\"jCAhz ChMk0b\"><span class=\"ryNqvb\"><strong>Making an appointment<\/strong> to obtain a new passport is very simple: just <strong>connect to the government website<\/strong>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/prenotami.esteri.it\/\">Prenot@mi.<\/a><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Before you attend the appointment, make sure you&#8217;ve prepared everything you need. Bring a physical debit card or exact cash with you for payment.<\/p>\n<p>If you arrive without something you need, we can&#8217;t process your application. You&#8217;ll have to make another appointment and come back another day.<\/p>\n<p>You must make an appointment before attending; in the absence of an appointment and only in cases of justified necessity, to return to Italy or the country of residence, the payment of urgency fees will be required.<\/p>\n<p>Please make sure you allow plenty of time to find parking (if you travel by car);<\/p>\n<p>Please make sure you arrive at least 10 minutes before your scheduled appointment time; if you are late for your appointment more than 5 (five) minutes, you will have to make another appointment and come back another day.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"HwtZe\" lang=\"en\"><span class=\"jCAhz ChMk0b\"><span class=\"ryNqvb\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/prenotami.esteri.it\/\">Prenot@mi.<\/a> platform allows users (once registered) to quickly and intuitively make an appointment to request one or more consular services.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<span class=\"jCAhz ChMk0b\"><span class=\"ryNqvb\">This is a fully automated system that will offer the user the\u00a0<strong>first available slot<\/strong>\u00a0for the requested service.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<span class=\"jCAhz ChMk0b\"><span class=\"ryNqvb\">The user himself will then be able to manage his own account and appointments.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Please note,<\/strong> each passport appointment only last 30 minutes and only one passport can be issued per each appointment;<\/p>\n<p>Passport issued to women can only show the maiden last name (if married) and, optionally, the last name of the husband may be printed on a separate page.<\/p>\n<p class=\"domanda\"><span style=\"color: #339966;\"><strong>HOW LONG IS IT VALID FOR?<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"risposta\">\n<p>The validity of a passport is related to the age of the holder on the day of issue:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>adults: 10 years;<\/li>\n<li>minors between 3 and 18: 5 years;<\/li>\n<li>minors under 3: 3 years<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"domanda\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>WHAT SHALL I BRING AT THE APPOINTMENT?<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"risposta\">\n<p>All applicants are required to bring:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>their <strong>most recent Italian passport<\/strong>, expired or expiring, or, if the applicant never had one, their <strong>current photo ID<\/strong> (other passport, driver\u2019s licence, carta d\u2019identit\u00e0, WA photo card); for passports issued to a child less than ten years old, it is required to bring a passport photo of the child <strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">on white background<\/span><\/strong> (see below);<\/li>\n<li>for <strong>children 10 years of age or less and for adults over 70 years of age<\/strong>, a passport size <strong>photograph<\/strong>, professionally taken and compatible with ICAO regulations, <strong>on white background;<\/strong> applicants over 10 years of age and less than 70 years of age do not need to bring a photo, as it can be taken in this Consulate;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u00a0If the passport was lost or stolen<\/span>: a copy or details of the <strong>WA Police report<\/strong>;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #339966;\"><strong>PAYMENT<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Payment can be made with either exact cash or physical (plastic)\u00a0 australian issued debit card\u00a0 (with a surcharge of\u00a0 <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">AUD 0,25 for the customer<\/span>) of which you know the PIN.\u00a0 Contactless payment\u00a0 (for example ApplePay or GooglePay) are NOT accepted; credit cards are also not accepted.<\/p>\n<div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"domanda\"><span style=\"color: #339966;\"><strong>PASSPORT FOR PARENTS OF UNDER 18s<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"risposta\">\n<p>Since the 14th June 2023 applicants with minor children (under 18s) no longer have to present the <strong>parental consent from the other parent(s)<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"domanda\"><span style=\"color: #339966;\"><strong>PASSPORT FOR UNDER 18s<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"risposta\">\n<p>In case of applicants under the age of 18, <strong>a valid application needs to be lodged and signed by both parents at the counter<\/strong>. If one of the parents is unable to attend, he\/she will have to produce a <strong>valid <a href=\"https:\/\/consperth.esteri.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/2023-assenso-genitoriale.pdf\">consent form<\/a><\/strong>, only as described in the dedicated section below.<\/p>\n<p><strong>If the child was not born in Italy and the birth was not registered in Italy<\/strong>, before applying for a passport the child\u2019s parents must provide us with the child\u2019s <strong>original<\/strong> full birth certificate, issued by the Registry of Births Deaths and Marriages, legalized by means of an <em>apost\u00eclle<\/em> and translated into Italian by a qualified translator (click <a href=\"http:\/\/www.naati.com.au\/\"><strong>HERE<\/strong><\/a> for a reference list and find more details in the section <a href=\"https:\/\/consperth.esteri.it\/en\/servizi-consolari-e-visti\/servizi-per-il-cittadino-italiano\/stato-civile\/birth\/\"><strong>VITAL RECORDS<\/strong><\/a>). However, please <strong>double check the recent changes regarding Citizenship which came into effect last 24 May 2025<\/strong>, as your child may be impacted by those and he or she may not be elegible to register as Italian Citizen.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>In any case, passports for minors cannot be issued on the same day as the Birth Certificate is presented for registration.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>For registration in Italy of children born overseas, please refer to the website of the relevant Consulate of Italy as per child&#8217;s birthplace.<\/p>\n<p>If the applicant under 18 is a <strong>dual citizen<\/strong>, a copy of an Australian (or other) passport also needs to be produced.<\/p>\n<p>For identification purposes, <strong>all children under the age of 18 must attend the appointment<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<div>\n<p class=\"domanda\"><span style=\"color: #339966;\"><strong>HOW TO PRODUCE A VALID PARENTAL CONSENT<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"risposta\">\n<p>A valid consent is expressed in different ways, <strong>depending on the nationality<\/strong> and circumstances of the granting parent:<\/p>\n<p>a) <strong>Italian and EU citizens<\/strong> don&#8217;t have to attend the appointment and can submit their signed consent form <strong>by post<\/strong>, <strong>e-mail or at the counter<\/strong>, together with a copy of their valid photo ID with a clearly visible signature. <strong>Said consent form must either be presented during the appointment or be received by this Consulate prior to the appointment<\/strong>;<\/p>\n<p>b) <strong>all citizens of non-EU countries<\/strong> need to sign their child\u2019s or other parent\u2019s passport application at the counter, during the appointment. Alternatively, the parent who is unable to visit the Consulate is given the option of signing a consent form in front of an Australian\u00a0<strong>notary public<\/strong> who will need to certify the parent&#8217;s signature and place their seal on the form. The notary\u2019s signature on the form will then have to be legalized by the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/dfat.gov.au\/about-us\/our-services\/apostilles-authentications-certificates-of-no-impediment-to-marriage\/Pages\/apostilles-authentications-and-certificates-of-no-impediment-to-marriage.aspx\">DFAT<\/a><\/strong> by means of an <em>apost\u00eclle.<\/em> Only at that point, and not before, will such consent form be valid and ready to be submitted to the Consulate, either during the appointment or before.<\/p>\n<p>When a non-EU parent granting consent is <strong>in another country<\/strong>, including temporarily, consent needs to be witnessed and e-mailed to us by Italy\u2019s relevant Authority <strong>prior to the actual passport appointment<\/strong> as follows:<br \/>\na) if in Italy, through the local <em>Questura;<br \/>\n<\/em>b) if in a third country, via the relevant Embassy or Consulate of Italy in that country.<\/p>\n<p>When a passport is being issued <strong>in Italy or by a different Embassy or Consulate of Italy<\/strong> and the parent granting consent is at any rate in Western Australia, said parent will need to follow the instructions in paragraph 1. The consent form will then be sent by this Consulate via certified e-mail to the relevant Questura or diplomatic mission, as requested.<\/p>\n<p>If one of the parents is deceased, a\u00a0<strong>death certificate<\/strong> will need to be sighted instead.<\/p>\n<p><strong>A missing or incorrect parental consent invalidates the application and requires the applicant to obtain a new appointment.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"risposta\">\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"domanda\"><span style=\"color: #339966;\"><strong>LETTER OF CONSENT FOR TRAVELLERS UNDER 14<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"risposta\">\n<p>Italian citizens under 14 intending to travel overseas on an Italian passport without at least one of their parents are first required to obtain a<strong> letter of consent<\/strong> from this Consulate, which will authorize the minor to travel in the care of a third person, institution or air carrier personnel.<\/p>\n<p>A letter of consent needs to be requested by the child&#8217;s parents by email (<a href=\"perth.passaporti@esteri.it\">perth.passaporti@esteri.it<\/a>) attaching the <a href=\"https:\/\/consperth.esteri.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/Dichiarazione_accompagnamento.docx\"><strong>application form<\/strong><\/a> and a copy of their Italian passports or other valid photo ID.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"domanda\"><span style=\"color: #339966;\"><strong>HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE TO RECEIVE A NEW PASSPORT?<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"risposta\">\n<p>Applicants who are <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/consperth.esteri.it\/en\/servizi-consolari-e-visti\/servizi-per-il-cittadino-italiano\/anagrafe-degli-italiani-residenti-allestero-aire\/\">AIRE-registered<\/a> through this Consulate<\/strong> normally receive a passport on the day of their appointment (<strong>or in few minutes every Tuesdays and Thursdays for over 65 citizens and expectant mothers<\/strong>).<\/p>\n<p>Those who are not AIRE-registered will have to wait until we receive the mandatory clearance from the Police in Italy or the Embassy\/Consulate where they are registered (this may take up to 30 days). All Italian citizens residing or intending to reside out of Italy for more than 12 months must enrol with AIRE. To avoid any delays, <strong>before requesting a passport\u00a0<\/strong>all applicants are strongly advised to verify that their official home address with us is current and that all the events in their family have been registered in Italy (marriage, births, divorce, etc.).<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #339966;\"><strong>IF A PASSPORT CANNOT BE ISSUED:<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>In <span class=\"yKMVIe\" role=\"heading\" aria-level=\"1\">circumstances<\/span> where a passport cannot be issued, an <a href=\"https:\/\/consperth.esteri.it\/it\/servizi-consolari-e-visti\/servizi-per-il-cittadino-italiano\/emergency-travel-documents-etd\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ETD<\/a> may be your other option.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"domanda\"><span style=\"color: #339966;\"><strong>HOW MUCH DOES IT COST?<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"risposta\">\n<p>Passport fees are only payable in AUD cash or\u00a0 physical (plastic) debit card, strictly on the day of the appointment.
