ITALIAN REPUBLIC DAY 2020

MESSAGE OF THE CONSUL OF ITALY IN PERTH, NICOLÒ COSTANTINI,
ON THE OCCASION OF THE 74TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE ITALIAN REPUBLIC

2nd of June 2020

Dear compatriots and dear friends of Italy,

on the occasion of the 74th Republic Day, my first one here in Perth, I am pleased to send you this short message.

With no doubt, this year the memory of the day on which our Republic was born bears a particular significance, since it is part of a global context characterized by the COVID-19 pandemic, which caused much suffering, mourning and economic difficulties in Italy and in Australia.

For these reasons, unfortunately, it is not possible to organize a beautiful event like every year in which we can remember the history and values of our Republic, as well as the essential contribution that the Italian community has given to the development of Western Australia.

I also think it would be difficult to celebrate with our heart still wounded by the pains of the very difficult moment faced by our fatherland and by the moved memory of those who are no longer among us because of this virus, as unknown as it is lethal.

However, we must look to the future with hope and optimism.

Firstly, because it is a distinctive feature of "Italianness". In the course of history we have, in fact, demonstrated to ourselves and to the world that Italians have an unshakable spirit and have always recovered after difficult moments with incredible stamina. All this has already emerged also on the occasion of this pandemic, during which the Italian people adapted resiliently to the pressing needs of the moment and the Italians in Western Australia did the same with rigor and dignity.

Secondly, the data on the reduction of contagion in our two countries let us hope for the possibility of returning to normalcy - a word that we always take for granted, but which on this occasion takes on an even greater value - and that we will soon have new opportunities to celebrate the beauty and pride of being Italian together, as well as returning to travel between our two countries.

To this aim, it is important to continue observing the precautionary measures indicated by our governments, since only with a choral effort will we be able to overcome the current difficulties together and seize the opportunities that arise before us with renewed vigor.

This acquires concrete importance especially now that we have to cope with the socio-economic consequences of the pandemic, the effects of which are also felt in Western Australia. I am sure that Italians will once again demonstrate their skills and determination, being able to count on a "country system" that will not withhold its support and that will aim to relaunch in any possible way the strength and quality of the so called "Made in Italy" at 360 degrees.

I, therefore, express my most cordial best wishes to all of you and your families for the Republic Day, with the hope that what in 1946 was the dawn of the new Italy could be for us in 2020 the dawn of a new era marked by stronger feelings of solidarity, unity and awareness.

By clicking on the image on the right you can listen to a special performance of our national anthem, performed by the Accademia Musicale Chigiana of Siena, to which we are grateful. I also invite you to click here to read the message of the Ambassador of Italy to Australia, H.E. Francesca Tardioli, and here for the message delivered yesterday at the Quirinale Palace by the President of the Republic.

Happy Republic Day 2020!
