Italian citizenship brings rights and duties towards the Republic of Italy. A passport is not synonym with citizenship, but only one of the rights descending from it. If you believe you may be eligible for Italian citizenship, please remember that, whilst knowledge of Italian language is not a prerequisite for all types of claims, full respect for Italy, its people and its constitutional values of democracy, tolerance and freedom are paramount.

Italian citizenship can be acquired by descent (at birth) or by grant.
